Basic Wig Knowledge
Thursday, March 20, 2025
Most people actually know very little about wigs. When they hear the word “wig,” they picture the cheap, grab-and-go pieces sold in malls, small shops, or even on street stalls.
In reality, those products are only the low-end of the market. They are in a completely different league from high-end, custom-made wigs.
China’s wig industry is now in a rapid growth phase: 80 % of the world’s wigs are produced in China and exported to Europe, the United States, Africa, South America and elsewhere. A custom wig is an intricate, labor-intensive object. It must pass through many precise steps—hair selection, hand-ventilating, bleaching, dyeing, etc.—and can take weeks of highly skilled work.
Therefore, to dismiss wigs as “street-stall junk” is simply wrong.
● By coverage area
-
Full wig (wig cap): covers the entire head, easy to put on, secure, large coverage, suitable for almost any situation.
-
Hair piece: made-to-order in any shape or size, highly flexible, very natural-looking, excellent breathability.
● By production method
-
Machine-made: mass-produced by machines, inexpensive, but less realistic, heavier, poor ventilation, tends to tangle and block follicles.
-
Hand-tied: every hair is knotted by hand, extremely natural, lightweight, breathable, comfortable, but more expensive.
● By construction craft
-
Machine-made cap
-
Semi-machine / semi-hand-tied (often called lace-front)
-
Full-lace cap
-
Jewish wig (also called injected-skin or silk-top)
-
Hair topper / integration piece
-
MONO cap
Injected-skin (silk-top) wigs are the most complex. They use European or Mongolian hair and are priced accordingly. The injected area is usually on the crown and consists of three layers of material. Hair is knotted on the middle lace layer, then pulled through the upper mesh so the knots are invisible, mimicking hair growing from the scalp. A soft fabric lining is added underneath for comfort.
MONO (monofilament) is a fine, firm mesh denser than lace. It can be used for the whole crown, the parting line, or the swirl area, giving the illusion that hair is sprouting from the scalp. It is popular, though slightly less breathable than lace.
● By fiber type
-
Synthetic fiber: made of chemical filaments, low realism, may itch or irritate, but cheap and holds its style well.
-
Human hair: collected, sanitized real hair. Looks and feels authentic, resists tangling, can be permed, colored and heat-styled, but costs more and is less style-retentive than synthetics.
